3 Steps to Being More Productive When Working From Home

When you work from home, being productive can be a real challenge when there are many distractions around you, such as other family members, phones ringing, the television tempting you, and housework staring at you. Being prepared ahead of time can go a long way to increasing your productivity and efficiency. Here are three steps to being more productive when you work where you live:

1. Plan your work in specific blocks of time. The advantage to doing this is that you can plan for distractions to be at a minimum. For example, if you have children in school, plan your work hours while they are in school. Pretend that during these blocks of time, you are working for an employer, and you are accountable to putting in these hours at your job. It will help you stay in the mindset that those hours are work hours, and you will be less likely to plan other activities at those times you have set aside to work.

2. Plan a way to lessen your distractions. If the television tempts you into switching it on, then conduct your work in another room in the house. If your phones ring too often during the day, get in the habit of not answering them, so that it teaches your friends not to call you during your work hours. If that fails, then simply switch all the ringers off so you don't hear them. Don't forget to turn the ringers back on when you are done working. If snacking during work becomes a habit and a distraction, then plan out your meals and snacks more carefully. You can even pack them in the morning when you pack the kids' school lunches and then eat from your lunch kit only.

3. Try trading with a friend who also works from home. This works especially well if you have babies not yet in school. How it works is that your babies go to their house while you get in a few quiet hours of work at your house, and then their babies come to your house so they can work. You can switch off days doing it this way.

If you try all three of the above steps, you should be able to greatly increase your efficiency and productivity in your work. Try implementing one at a time, and it should be an easy transition.
